Partner visa (subclass 820/801/309/100)

The Department of Home Affairs has implemented specific

criteria to assess your relationship over two years

before granting permanent residency.

There are two temporary partner visas:

1. Temporary Partner Visa (Subclass 309)

2. Temporary Partner Visa (Subclass 820)

This visa is for partners who are not living in Australia at the time of application.

An Australian visa office in your partner’s country of origin will process the application.

This visa is for individuals who have already entered Australia on a valid visa and wish to switch to a visa that reflects their partner status.

Both of these visas can lead to permanent residency through Subclass 100 or 801 visas.
